Stony Brook mourns the passing of Edmund D. Pellegrino, MD, an educational innovator and a founder of the field of bioethics, who conceived of a model for interdisciplinary health sciences education and clinical care. As the Vice President of Stony Brook University’s Health Sciences Center and the first Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Pellegrino put Stony Brook on a course more than 40 years ago to become a leading academic medical center. He came to Stony Brook in 1966 as Vice President for Health Sciences and became the Dean of the School of Medicine in 1968. He served in both positions until leaving Stony Brook in 1973. Dr. Pellegrino was active until his death in June, a week shy of his 93rd birthday.
