Information about Course Reserves
Material that is on reserve has a shorter circulation period and may be restricted to use in the Library.
Material is placed on Reserve for one (1) semester. At the end of the semester, all print material is removed from Reserve unless a new request is submitted.
To ensure that students have access to Reserves material at the start of classes, please submit your Reserves Requests by the following dates:
Fall Semester – July 30
Winter Semester – November 30
Spring Semester – November 30
Summer Semester – April 30
*Requests received after the above dates may not be processed before the start of the semester.*
Before assigning Reserve material to students, please check the catalog or contact the Reserves department to make sure the material is available for use.
ORDERING NEW MATERIALS – RESERVES
The Libraries do not purchase materials for course reserves. Instructors are encouraged to draw course materials from the Libraries’ physical or online collections or from the many open education resources (OER) now readily available. Discover OERs on the SBU Libraries’ Open Education Guide (http://guides.library.stonybrook.edu/open-education/home), and Open SUNY Textbooks and OER Services (http://textbooks.opensuny.org/).
It is recommended that instructors contact their library subject liaison if they anticipate a future need for materials not already in the collections. Instructors also may submit purchase requests through the online purchase recommendation form. Submissions will be routed to the appropriate library subject liaison. Instructors may supply personal copies to be placed on reserve for the duration of the semester.
