Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Masters (foreign equivalent or higher) in Library Science or a Masters of Library and Information Science, or equivalent terminal degree from an American Library Association accredited institution or equivalent; a distinguished national and international reputation for sustained scholarly accomplishments, and a record of excellence in teaching, research, and service appropriate to appointment at the rank of Full Librarian at a major research university; a minimum of 10 years of professional library experience in an academic library, including 5 years of proven administrative and managerial experience in long-range planning, resource allocation, and personnel development; dynamic leadership skills and demonstrated potential for leading transformational change; strong communication, supervisory and management skills, including stewardship of fiscal and human resources; ability to work effectively with university senior leadership, colleges, schools, and faculty in implementing an ambitious strategic plan; record of developing initiatives that support the curriculum, research, and scholarship; demonstrated dedication to student and faculty services;

commitment to diversity among faculty, staff, and students;  success in creating a culture of continuous professional development and learning among library faculty and staff; expertise in assessing and developing library services, collections, and technology applications; thorough understanding of the role of library technologies in research, education, and healthcare; demonstrated knowledge of emerging areas of librarianship, including the capabilities and future trends of library technology and systems to maximize discovery and access to scholarly resources

Additional advanced degree. Expertise in grant writing and fundraising.


Brief Description of Duties:

Stony Brook University Libraries is the largest academic research library on Long Island offering world-class research collections and services in support of the teaching and research mission of the university. The collections include approximately 2.5 million print volumes, 350,000 e-books, 75,000 electronic journals, world-renowned special collections, a robust music collection, and a growing number of resources in the areas of data sets, streaming video, and licensed mobile apps. The Stony Brook University Libraries include several distinct facilities: the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library (Main Stacks, Music Library, Special Collections and University Archives, Center for Scholarly Communication, Map Collection, Government Documents, reading rooms); the Marine and Atmospheric Sciences Information Center; the Chemistry Library; the Math, Physics, and Astronomy Library; the Southampton Library; and the Health Sciences Library. The Libraries belong to the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) and the Health Sciences Library is a member of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The Libraries maintain memberships and affiliations in arXiv, Association of Research Libraries, SPARC, Center for Research Libraries, SUNY Connect, DuraSpace (as a SUNY member), the Council on Library and Information Resources, Digital Library Federation, Coalition of Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, Roper Center, OCLC Research Library Partnership, and ORCID through the National Network of the National Libraries of Medicine. The Libraries also participate in the SUNY Library Consortium, the NorthEast Research Libraries consortium, and several statewide consortia and partnerships. The Libraries are currently migrating to Ex Libris’ Alma library services platform and Primo discovery solution. DSpace, Content DM, Digital Commons, and Omeka are used for managing digital assets and a growing institutional repository.


The Dean of University Libraries will direct the planning and advancement of the Stony Brook University Libraries. It is expected that candidates will articulate and establish a clear, forward-thinking strategic vision in terms of re-defining and re-invigorating the role of a university library in the 21st century. For all academic matters, the Dean of University Libraries reports to the Provost and works closely with the Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences Center. The Dean of University Libraries will hold a faculty rank of full Librarian

  • Provide strategic vision and sound management in directing the planning and advancement of the Stony Brook University Libraries.
  • Develop service and collection models that capitalize on new and innovative information formats and access technologies.
  • Lead philanthropic efforts.
  • Form collaborative partnerships among the campuses in support of intra- and extra-campus research and educational activities in a multitude of disciplines.
  • Represent the Stony Brook University Libraries locally, nationally, and internationally.
